MomBlogger Income Month 1

MomBlogger Income Project

February 2014

I would like to extend an invitation to you to join me in my “Income from a Mom Blog” experiment. I want to show you here how I’m making money with this blog. I’m calling it an experiment because if we think of a new endeavor as a project, or experiment, we give ourselves permission to go ahead and start. It doesn’t have to be perfect out of the gate-it’s okay to learn as we go. And it’s okay to fail because failing is how we learn, improve and succeed.

My income this past month, $8.37, is not very much money. However, it’s a total joy to me. Why? Because it signals the beginning of a very important journey. I want to help all of you stay at home moms, would-be stay at home moms, and stay at home women (SAHW?) reach monetary goals, allowing the freedom to stay home, or the freedom to travel, or the freedom to take friends to lunch…whatever freedom you want. To me, that’s what money means, freedom.

Yes, I think it’s a real possibility to make more than $8.37 in one month. Want to see proof of what’s possible with a recipe blog? Hop over to Pinch of Yum and view their monthly income reports. It’s where I first got inspired to “monetize” this blog. Pinch of Yum’s income for January 2014, $17,735.97! And just to give me even more hope, their first month of posting income: $21.97.

My own goal is to make about $1200 a month. I believe it’s entirely possible to get there from $8.37. Seem kind of crazy? Follow along…My plan is:

  • grow my audience–without an audience, there is no way to make money with a blog.
  • try various ways to “monetize”, there are many ways, not just placing ads.
  • share my experiences with you here.

February 2014 Income

This income was strictly from one source, Lijit Media. Lijit’s ads are placed only in my side bar at this time. Lijit pays on a CPM model, meaning they pay according to “traffic”, or page views, rather than by clicks on ads.

I didn’t list any expenses because I didn’t have any in February, other than the food I cooked. I pay my blog hosting quarterly, it’s due in March, so I will list it then. I just hope my net income will still be on the positive side after paying for hosting:)
Audience–February Views–43,552

One special note on February views, the very big numbers of over 4,000 views per day fell over Super Bowl weekend, and my post on Philly Cheese Steak Crescents was rocking!

Blog Income

This month I made money by placing ads on the site. There are plenty of other ways to monetize and I would like to experiment, and share my results here. Maybe there are a few other mom bloggers (or nana bloggers, like me!) who will be able to learn from what I post. Maybe we can learn from each other.

I do have affiliate links here on CookTheTV. However, I didn’t make any money from them this past month, actually so far I have made 9.95 from this blog post, How to Take Killer Food Photos, back closer to the time I originally posted it…around a year and a half ago! I was extremely excited about that bit of money, too. I could look at my stats, see where someone found the post by searching something about taking food photos, clicked on the affiliate link and later I received the notice I had sold a copy of the ebook. It made me happy to think I had helped that person find what they were looking for:)

Blog Growth Plans

I’m learning how to grow my audience. Areas I need improvement:

  • guest posting
  • sharing posts
  • getting better with social media

I will share things I’m trying on each month’s income report.

Join me?

You may notice a trend here. I like helping people! If I can help people find info they need and make money while doing it, it’s a definite win/win for me. If I can also help others make money while finding their joy, ultimate win/win!

If I never make any money with this little blog, that will be okay, too. I have already been so fortunate to be a part of the blogging community. I’m having a lot of fun meeting people and making lasting friendships:)

I will post here at least once a month on CookTheTV’s income and things I have learned along the way about growing your audience and monetizing your blog.

Thank you for reading this post to the end:) If you would like to join me in creating and/or growing an income from your blog, join my email list to be notified of new posts, and please leave a message below. Also, bookmark this page. I will be updating with the latest news and helpful takeaways here on this page.

Would love to hear from you and answer any questions I can, or help you find the answers you need.

I’m so interested to see how this goes for you! I have one affiliate link on my blog, but that’s it. I can’t decide whether I’d like to do more or not.
I do agree that guest posts (both ways) are great ways to increase traffic. Commenting on blogs with large readerships can be great too.
    Good luck!!!

Jamie, Thank you so much! I’m a little nervous, but I’m excited about sharing with others, so I’m going for it!
My pageviews have fallen a little so far this month, so I’ve really got to work hard!
      Thanks again!

What a great thing to start. I am sure it will be interesting to track what you are spending and making. I’ve considered monetizing my blog before but have done NOTHING…this motivates me to thinking about it. I can’t wait to see if you’ve posted an April update.

Thanks so much Amy! I’m going to post one for April that will include March…I decided to put two months together since I have been a bad blogger and haven’t posted many recipes…I thought my readers would appreciate a few recipes first! A sneak preview: I’m bringing in just enough to cover my hosting fees:)
